On 24 March
2009, members and guests toured the Ascent building in
Covington, Kentucky.
The building was designed by Daniel Libeskind and is a
collection of condominiums. It varies from 14 stories on one
end to 22 stories on the other. The tour was conducted by a
sales agent and an engineer, who are on the staff to finish
construction as the condos are sold.
The sales agent
described the amenities of the building in general and a
finished and furnished 14th floor condo. The engineer
described an unsold, unfinished condo on the 22nd floor. He
described, and showed us, the outward leaning exterior walls
that were used to support the imaginative shape of the
building. He described the methods they had to use to site
both the piping and the electrical conduits in the concrete
floors since there are no straight and few vertical walls in
the place from which to take real measurements.
He also
described various construction procedures and problems
encountered while building. He then took us to the basement
where he described the electric power distribution
throughout the building. He also described the water
distribution system with its booster pumps to maintain
pressure to the upper floors, the heating, which is
primarily heat pumps, and some of the other utilities
problems encountered along the way. The tour was well
received by all attendees, and following it, we retired to
FirstWatch for lunch. |
