The term engineer dates back to 1325 when engineer meant one who operates engines. However, the practice of engineering can be traced back to examples such as the pyramids in Egypt and the Parthenon in Greece. Engineering is the profession of
acquiring and applying scientific, mathematical, and technical knowledge to design and implement structures, machines, devices and processes that realize a desired objective. Engineering is a broad discipline that is made up several different branches such as chemical, civil, and electrical engineering.
Aerospace Engineering
Aerospace engineering is sometimes referred to as rocket science. It can be traced back to the late 19th century. This division of engineering is made up of two major fields of engineering; aeronautical and
astronautical. Aerospace engineering is the architect behind the design, research, and improvement of atmospheric and space environments. Aerospace engineers focus on the structure and scientific creation of aircraft or spacecraft.
Chemical Engineering
Chemical engineering is the branch of engineering that deals with the application of the physical and life sciences. Combined with mathematics, chemical engineers, look to covert raw materials into more valuable forms. Chemical engineers are also concerned with finding valuable new materials and techniques. Chemical engineering can be traced back to 1805 when John Dalton published his
Atomic Weights which allowed chemical equations to be balanced. French physicist Sadi Carnot, was the first person to study thermodynamics in steam engines. There were many other key steps in the development of chemical engineering including Hermann von Helmholtz's founding thermodynamics paper in 1882 and the founding of the American Institute of Chemical Engineers in 1908.
Civil Engineering
The earliest practices of civil engineering date back to between 4000 and 2000 BC. Civil engineering has given birth to the wheel, aqueducts, sails, and bridges. It is has been an integral part of human development. Civil engineering is comprised of many branches such as materials engineering, transportation engineering, and structural engineering. Civil engineering takes place in both the public sector as well as the private sector. Civil engineers are responsible for the planning, design, development, and maintenance of infrastructures. Theses infrastructures include buildings, bridges, tunnels, dams, and water supply.
Material Engineering
Materials science engineering is the study of material and its properties in engineering. Material selection is an essential key to any engineering design or application in material engineering. It is one of the oldest forms of engineering and incorporates applied physics and chemistry. Over the years materials science has extended its database of materials by including ever form of material including biological materials. Engineers within this field focus on understanding materials to achieve desired properties with new materials. These new material properties not only allow advancement in material science but also create a cause for new physics.
Electrical Engineering
Electrical engineering is the field of engineering that is concerned with the study and application of electricity, electronics, and electromagnetism. The study of electricity became of interest in the early 17th century. William Gilbert who designed a device that detected the presence of statically charged objects is given credit as the first electrical engineer. It wasn't until the 19th century that research into electricity began to intensify. The work of Georg Ohm, James Maxwell, and Michael Faraday helped to advance the field of
electrical engineering. In the following years, individuals such as Nikolas Tesla, Thomas Edison and Sir Charles Parsons also made key contributions to the field.
Mechanical Engineering
This broad engineering field is a diverse subject dealing with all things that move. Mechanical engineering intertwines applied science and math. Mechanical engineering focuses on the principles of force, energy, and motion. Engineers in this field must comprehend concepts such as mechanics, material science, and energy. Those concepts and the principles of mechanical engineering allow mechanical engineers to design anything from minute parts and large systems. Mechanical engineers play an essential role in industries, such as automotive, aerospace, biotechnology, electronics, energy conversion, and automation.
